Why the layers matter

Shallow soil responds quickly to sun, rain, and overnight cooling. Deeper layers change more slowly and help show the stored seasonal signal beneath short-lived surface swings.

5–10 cm

Seed-zone response

The most responsive layers for following rapid warming, cooling, and wetting near the surface.

20 cm

Root-zone bridge

A useful middle layer for seeing whether a surface change is beginning to propagate downward.

50–100 cm

Seasonal storage

Deeper observations move more slowly and reveal the ground’s longer thermal and moisture memory.

Interpretation boundary

USCRN stations are high-quality climate reference sites, not field-specific agronomic prescriptions. Conditions can differ materially across soil types, slope, cover, drainage, tillage, and distance from the station. Use local extension guidance and in-field measurements for operational decisions.
